What originally inspired you to pursue a career in graphic design?
I first discovered my passion for design during a high school art class. We were assigned to create an advertisement for our favorite brand using Photoshop 7. I chose to design an ad for Gibson guitars, featuring three different-colored SG guitars on a blue background with the Gibson logo prominently displayed. I don’t have the file anymore, but I vividly remember the layout. That project earned me an A, and it was the moment I realized how much I enjoyed the creative process and the power of visual communication.
Do you have a particular design project that you’re most proud of? What made it special to you?
One project that stands out is my work with Teküa Brewery. I was given complete creative control, which allowed me to fully explore my imagination and push the boundaries of my design capabilities. The freedom to experiment and the trust they placed in me made it a deeply rewarding experience. It’s a project I’m particularly proud of because it reflects my personal style and the level of creativity I strive to bring to all my work.
How do you stay updated with the latest design trends and tools?
I’ve always believed in learning from the masters, so I often revisit the works of design legends like Paul Rand and Massimo Vignelli. I also stay updated by browsing platforms like Behance, Dribbble, and ArtStation, where I explore current trends and see what’s resonating in the design community. Additionally, I continue to apply the same method my high school teacher taught me: look up previous work for inspiration and learn from it. It’s a simple but effective way to keep my skills sharp and stay connected to the ever-changing landscape of design.
What aspects of graphic design do you find most fulfilling or exciting?
For me, the most fulfilling part of the design process is seeing the client’s reaction when they finally see the finished product. It’s rewarding to know that the collaboration and hard work have paid off, and that the final design aligns with the client’s vision. That moment of shared success is what excites me the most about graphic design.
Is there a specific design style or aesthetic that you prefer working with?
I’m particularly drawn to minimalist design. I admire the work of designers like Aaron Draplin and Tom Geismar, who excel at creating simple yet impactful designs. I find that minimalism allows for a clear and effective communication of ideas, and it’s an aesthetic I enjoy working with the most.
How do you approach challenges or tight deadlines in your design work?
Tight deadlines are a common occurrence in the industry, and I’ve learned to handle them efficiently. My approach involves meticulous preparation—getting all the necessary elements in place before diving into the work. I like to have a checklist ready so I can hit the ground running without wasting time on back-and-forths. This strategy allows me to stay focused and deliver quality work even under pressure.
Can you share a moment when you received particularly valuable feedback or advice that influenced your career?
Early in my career, I worked at a Printing Company where I was responsible for organizing design files and ensuring everything was in order. This experience taught me the importance of maintaining clean, well-organized files—a practice that not only streamlines production but also reflects a designer's professionalism. The attention to detail I developed there has been a key asset throughout my career and continues to influence my approach to design.
What role does collaboration play in your design process, and how do you ensure effective teamwork?
Collaboration is vital to the design process, whether I’m working within a team or freelancing. I prioritize clear communication to ensure that everyone is aligned with the project’s goals and that all voices are heard. Regular check-ins, active listening, and adaptability are key strategies I use to maintain effective teamwork. By fostering a collaborative atmosphere and leveraging diverse perspectives, I help create a shared vision that leads to successful design outcomes.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work that influence your design perspective?
I’m passionate about photography, particularly inspired by Robert Capa’s work, especially his Omaha Beach series. Photography teaches me a lot about composition and storytelling, which directly influences my design work. I also love cooking, where I find inspiration in the artful presentation of food. Both hobbies help me appreciate the details and nuances that make a design truly compelling.
What motivates you to keep growing and evolving as a designer?
What motivates me is the dynamic nature of graphic design. The constant influx of new designers and fresh ideas keeps the field exciting. It’s fascinating to see trends come and go, and I love how these shifts influence my own work. I’m driven by the desire to keep evolving alongside the industry, always learning and adapting to stay at the forefront of design.
